Eyewear 2013: The Sunglasses edition

Words by Ifza Khushnud

The sun is finally out, we don’t know how long for but you’ll definitely need a new pair of sunglasses. We’ve picked six of the best for you to choose from. Enjoy.

“Hand-crafted in Italy, designed in NY.” Illesteva has created a name as a contemporary brand always pushing the boundaries with styles and materials used for their sunglasses. The Leonards are one of the most popular styles in the stable, this particular pair in a matte tortoiseshell acetate pay homage to a much more simpler time, classic summertime cool.

tom ford

Tom Ford Henry

The King of fashion has been putting his hand to eyewear for a few years now and like anything he’s touched, its turned to gold. Here, Tom Ford takes on the classic horn rimmed style and adds his signature on the temple. They come in a variety of colours and add an extra dimension to the retro look.

LGR Cape Town

After discovering his Italian grandfather’s colonial-style sunglasses, Luca Gnecchi Ruscone was inspired to create his own line. When it came to producing his designs, he turned to the original Italian manufacturers that created his grandfather’s pair and LGR sunglasses was born. Hand crafted and polished, no branding and a mix of modern and classic styles with a minimalist look, we fell in love with this Cape Town pair.

warby parker

Warby Parker Winston

Watch out for Warby Parker, making big waves across the pond in the US, we’ll hopefully be seeing stores pop up in the UK soon. Great styles, excellent craftsmanship and on top of that, reasonable pricing. We’re particularly fond of these squared off frames in lunar fade, mixing 60’s sensibilities with 21st century cool.

Garrett leight

Garrett Leight Calfornia Optical Hampton Detachable-Front

A relatively newcomer to the eyewear business, born out of Venice Beach, LA, Garrett Leight looks to reflect that easy going laidback California lifestyle through its pieces. These detachable frames in mottled brown offer two glasses in one for that versatile gent who hasn’t got time to mess around.

Han Kjoben

Han Kjøbenhavn Timeless (Army)

This Danish brand embodies all that is Scandinavian, simple, bold but effective designs. This is reflected in their timeless eyewear range, you may think its slightly ballsy calling your glasses timeless but that’s what you get with this classic pair.
